Mobile Design Trends & Guidelines 2015

Posted Februar 19th, 2015 in Blog by creative workline

mobile_design_trends_guidelines_2015

Every once in a while we see a change in design trends. We definitely can say that the last couple of years we have been seeing more minimalistic design around us, flat design. All the big players like Apple iOS and Google Android have now lost their shadows and hard gradients. They’ve replaced it with hard elements.

We often just speak of flat design in general, but within every design trend we see a lot of design elements which we see more often than others. Besides the shadows, bevels, patterns, etc that didn’t make the end of the year we have seen more trends showing up: simpler and more minimalistic user interfaces, more sophisticated color palettes, blurred and translucent elements, better use of images, animations between screens and elements, feedback and better use of gestures. So which of these trends are we going to see more in the next year?

Android 5.0 Lollipop: A look into Material Design

Posted Januar 10th, 2015 in Blog by creative workline

Android 5.0 Lollipop

As the flat design trend keeps on being implemented everywhere around us, the designers at Google are busy implementing it in all of their products. Anyone who is using and keeping track of Google’s products can tell that all products are making use of their design language called Material Design. From the 5th version of Android that is called Lollipop, we can see that Material Design is used in their mobile operating system.

Material Design

Google owns a lot of (digital) products and they are getting design updates separately. With a new complete design language all products will be more coherent. Google had a goal in sight before they started creating their new design language. They wanted to design a visual language that uses classic principles of good design and implement it on a technological level. With the new Material Design they wanted to implement a newer (flatter) design language, but wanted to make the design elements act and move as real existing elements.

Welche Version sollte eine Android App für hohe Reichweite unterstützen?

Posted Dezember 17th, 2014 in Blog by creative workline

Core Location Manager in iOS 8 and fetching location in the background

Posted Dezember 5th, 2014 in Blog by creative workline

In the first part of this post we will discuss the changes that come to the CoreLocation Framework in iOS 8, and in the second part we will go over how to keep updating the app’s location in the background. So let’s begin!

Core Location Manager in iOS 8

The Core Location Framework in iOS worked over the years in almost the same way, in some version updates Apple may have changed the delegate methods, but all in all the process always stayed the same. Although the process in iOS 8 is not that different, Apple added two steps that might at first cause some trouble to developers who didn’t have a look into the new iOS 8 SDK.

Old Code behavior in iOS 8

- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
// Do any additional setup after loading the view, typically from a nib.
// initialize the location manager
self.locationManager = [[CLLocationManager alloc] init];
self.locationManager.delegate = self;
// Start getting location updates
[self.locationManager startUpdatingLocation];
}
// Location updates
- (void)locationManager:(CLLocationManager *)manager didUpdateLocations:(NSArray *)locations
{
// Do what ever you want with the location
}

Until iOS 8, this is how a simple location retrieving process would look like.
This code fails in iOS 8, furthermore this code fails without any sort of warnings, exceptions or errors, the app won’t ask for permission to get location updates, the process won’t start at all and we, the app developers won’t be told why. Continue Reading »

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Posted November 25th, 2014 in Blog by creative workline

How Google and Apple are getting into the automobile industry, and what is coming for app developers.

Apple Carplay Android Auto Side by Side

Technology inside the car is not a new trend. During the last years, several car manufacturers had tried to add new features in order to improve the driver’s experience. Google and Apple have realized that maybe they could bring their most known operating systems to the car. They are called “Apple CarPlay” and “Android Auto”. And here it is a new world of opportunities to app developers.

A new era of technologies

While Android and iOS are trying to lead the mobile industry, other new devices are coming, known as “wearables”. These new devices are focused on improving the quality of life through technology and as cars are in our life, they are also included. So this article is not about „smartwatches“, but cars’ new operating systems.
