Auch dieses Jahr war die droidcon Android Konferenz ein Berlin wieder ein Fixpunkt für uns als App Entwickler. Die Artikel von 2012 und 2013 können Sie übrigens hier und hier nachlesen. Dieser Artikel gibt einen Überblick über ausgewählte Vorträge am Freitag dem 09.05., dem zweiten Konferenztag.

Begonnen hat Tag mit einer Keynote von Sony, in der es vor allem darum ging, mit welchem Produkten wir uns zukünftig in den nächsten Monaten und Jahren als User aber auch als Entwickler beschäftigen werden. Das Jahr 2014 steht bei Sony im Zeichen von SmartWear Experience sowie Premium Smartphones und Tablets, hier will sich der Hersteller positionieren. Wir können uns schon mal auf interessante neue Smart Watches freuen, aber auch SmartEyeglasses wird zukünftig ein wichtiges Thema sein. Letzte Woche war es endlich wieder so weit. Die droidcon 2014 stand vor der Tür und fand vom 08. Mai – 10. Mai 2014 statt. Menschen aus ganz Europa reisten an um auf dem Themengebiet Android auf dem neuesten Stand zu sein. Dieser Artikel soll sich vor allem an App Entwickler richten, da auch die Keynotes der Messe meist entwicklungsorientiert waren. Im Folgenden werden einige der Vorträge vom 8. Mai 2014 zusammengefasst. Neben der droidcon fand übrigens auf dem selben Gelände auch der LinuxTag statt.

Android Programming – Pushing the Limits

Senior Android Developer Erik Hellman von Spotify eröffnete die droidcon indem er sein Buch „Android Programming – Pushing the Limits“ vorstellte. Es ist an bereits erfahrende Android Entwickler gerichtet und beschäftigt sich vor allem damit, wie das System Android am effektivsten genutzt werden kann. Komponenten wie Services, Broadcasts, Memory Management sind nur einige Themen welche detailliert behandelt werden.

Last week Berlin was the place to be for Android developers, experts, and enthusiasts from all over Europe. The droidcon 2013 took place from April 7th to 10th in Berlin. We were part of it and sum up the most relevant topics from the two conference days in this article. What has changed from last year’s conference is that Android is now the clear leader on the mobile operating system and smartphones market as far as device sales are concerned. Overtaking Apple’s iOS in market share, the mobile OS by Google can now be found on entry level to high end phones, tablets, TVs, game consoles, watches, etc.

Apart from the huge success with devices sold the conference kicked of with the statement that iOS is still ahead in terms of commercial success. There are several factors for that: People are spending more money on iPhone apps because they want to impress, Apple has become the synonym for apps („there’s an app for that“), and iPhone users are rather early adopters. Also purchasing is fully integrated on iOS and the payment information has to be provided once you set up an iTunes account. On the other hand transparency and privacy could become a competitive advantage for Android. Especially app developers have to keep that in mind and enhance user trust and be transparent. Today we‚ve checked out new developments in the Android world and beyond at the the german Android conference droidcon Berlin 2012. It is the Android conference for the German speaking world. A lot of attendees came from Austria, Switzerland and other countries as well. Compared to last year the conference has gotten bigger – but not necessarily better. Sadly, a lot of talks were aimed to market/sell a product or framework. We would have preferred if there where more dedicated technical talks. Anyway, a conference is always a good way to get a compact impression of the current trends and a great way to network and meet interesting likeminded people.
