Last week Berlin was the place to be for Android developers, experts, and enthusiasts from all over Europe. The droidcon 2013 took place from April 7th to 10th in Berlin. We were part of it and sum up the most relevant topics from the two conference days in this article. What has changed from last year’s conference is that Android is now the clear leader on the mobile operating system and smartphones market as far as device sales are concerned. Overtaking Apple’s iOS in market share, the mobile OS by Google can now be found on entry level to high end phones, tablets, TVs, game consoles, watches, etc.

Apart from the huge success with devices sold the conference kicked of with the statement that iOS is still ahead in terms of commercial success. There are several factors for that: People are spending more money on iPhone apps because they want to impress, Apple has become the synonym for apps („there’s an app for that“), and iPhone users are rather early adopters. Also purchasing is fully integrated on iOS and the payment information has to be provided once you set up an iTunes account. On the other hand transparency and privacy could become a competitive advantage for Android. Especially app developers have to keep that in mind and enhance user trust and be transparent. Q4/2012: Android rund 70% Marktanteil, iOS rund 20%

Fast 70% der weltweit verkauften Smartphones im Q4/2012 liefen mit Googles ‚Choice Matters‘ Betriebssystem Android. Damit konnte Google den Marktanteil seines Betriebssystems gegenüber dem Vorjahr von rund 50% auf gut 70% rapide ausbauen. Apple büßte dagegen 2,7 Prozentpunkte auf rund 21% Marktanteil ein. BlackBerry mit 3,5% und Microsoft mit Windows Phone mit rund 3% belegen abgeschlagen die Plätze 3 und 4. Kaum noch eine nennenswerte Rolle spielt Nokias Symbian, welches durch den Strategiewechel vom Nokia ab 2012 auf Windows Phone als das Betriebssystem Nummer 1 statt auf Symbian zu setzen,  fast 10% an Marktanteil verlor. The standard computer, whether Mac or PC, has always been a machine meant for geeks and professionals. But when Apple released the iPhone, a new class of computing was born. With fullscreen apps, a hidden filesystem, limited configuration, and entire ecosystems designed to store and serve one’s digital existence, and to provide all the media, games, and apps that one could possibly want, these were truly consumer devices. The lines between software development, hardware manufacturing, and book, music, television, and film publishing had blurred.

Apple was quickly joined by Google and then Amazon, and smartphones were quickly joined by tablets of all shapes and sizes. These new devices, with their unprecedented power, convenience, and entertainment value, and lacking the intimidation factor and cost of traditional PCs, were soon in demand by pretty much everybody. Obwohl das “neue” Android wie seine Vorgänger wenig überraschend nach einer Süßigkeit benannt ist kommen mit ihm einige Neuerungen. Über viele wurde schon im Vorfeld spekuliert und diskutiert. Was als erstes auffällt ist die weichere Bedienung. Kosmetische Änderungen bei Animationen erzeugen ein angenehmes Gefühl. Insgesamt wirkt das User Interface bei Benutzerinteraktionen flüssiger. Aber auch hardwaretechnisch wurde gefeilt. Die Framerate wurde auf 60 fps angehoben, sowie die Mehrkernunterstützung weiter verbessert. Dies macht sich deutlich bemerkbar gegenüber Ice Cream Sandwich. Alles wirkt aus einem Guss und die Anwendungen reagieren schneller auf Benutzereingaben.

Eine weitere sofort auffallende Neuerung betrifft die Notifications. Bei verpassten Anrufen wird es dem User ermöglicht, direkt über die Benachrichtigung zurückzurufen. Des Weiteren werden e-Mails einzeln gelistet aufgezeigt und der Anwender muss nicht erst die Applikation aufrufen. Auch wird der komplette Text eingehender SMS, sowie Fotos von MMS, angezeigt.

„Laut Schätzung des Ex-Nokia-Exec Tomi Ahonen waren im zweiten Quartal 2012 weltweit knapp über eine Milliarde Smartphones in Benutzung. Allein mit Android-Smartphones telefonieren derzeit 427 Millionen Menschen. Apples iPhone kommt mit 198 Millionen Nutzern auf Platz drei hinter Symbian mit noch 259 Millionen aktiven Geräten.“ schreibt statista.de. Der Marktanteil von Android liegt dabei laut Kantar bei neuverkauften Smartphones in Deutschland mittlerweile bereits bei 72,2 Prozent.
